“I want to understand how patients are feeling emotionally and mentally, how their overall health is and what their social support system looks like. By getting a full picture of their situation, I can better provide what people need.”

— Alaina

Do you have any favorite memories of working with patients you'd like to share?

I was working with a young woman who was experiencing poor nutrition because of her chronic disease. She was also struggling to navigate the medical system, due in part to a language barrier. We were able to provide compassionate care, and over time we helped her avoid the emergency department. Her nutrition greatly improved, and more than 10 years later, we still keep in touch.

What do you think sets the care apart at Fred Hutch?

Fred Hutch is a globally recognized powerhouse for cancer research and care. We have supportive specialties specifically focused on everything that people with cancer need. Not only are patients able to receive specific treatments from their care team, they can also get everything they need throughout the process.

I am part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team and I work closely with all providers to provide high-quality patient care. My approach to care centers around looking at the patient as a whole person.

Provider Background

Areas of Clinical Practice
Head and neck cancers

I am a certified physician assistant who sees patients at the South Lake Union Clinic and UW Medical Center – Montlake.

As a registered dietitian, I worked closely with patients and found a lot of satisfaction in helping them through their needs. Now, my scope has widened, and I can help provide more comprehensive care. The work we do optimizes patients' quality of life and saves lives.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
