Hematology

My first goal is to understand how someone’s illness is impacting them. From there, we’ll review what we know and what we need to figure out so we can select the optimal treatment.

— Dr. Boothby

Why did you decide to focus on immune-related blood disorders?

I’ve always believed that every illness has a cause—and that finding that cause is key to choosing the right treatment. Hematology is a field where that philosophy thrives, especially as we uncover why the immune system can attack the body’s own blood cells. I’m passionate about using these insights to deliver the most precise, personalized care possible.

What inspires you about your work? Do you have any stories to share?

As a researcher, I explore the underlying biology of hematologic conditions to reveal new insights. As a clinician, I’m passionate about translating these advances to your care. Making sure we get the basics right is just as important as the latest discovery.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Non-malignant hematology, autoimmune cytopenia, immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP), inborn errors of immunity

I am a hematologist who sees patients at the Sloan Clinic and Fred Hutch at UW Medical Center - Montlake.

I study how variations in our genetic blueprint, changes in gene activity and shifts in immune cell behavior can lead the body to attack its own blood cells. By mapping these genetic and immune profiles, I’m working toward a future of treatments tailored to each person’s unique biology.
