About

Dr. Anna Wald is a board-certified infectious disease physician and clinical virology researcher at Fred Hutch. Her work focuses on infections in people with weakened immune systems and preventing viral diseases through new treatments and vaccines.

Background

Dr. Wald specializes in caring for people whose immune systems have been weakened by cancer treatment or viral infections such as HIV, making them more vulnerable to serious infections. She is the head of the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington.

Dr. Wald’s research focuses on understanding how viral infections spread, how they can be treated and how they can be prevented. Much of her work focuses on herpes viruses, a common group of viruses that can cause serious illness in people with compromised immune systems. She is also involved in developing new vaccines to protect against a variety of viral pathogens.

In addition, Dr. Wald is an investigator in clinical trials of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine and contributes to projects aimed at developing infectious disease testing. These efforts include developing home test kits that allow people to collect their own blood samples for coronavirus antibody studies, helping expand participation in research and improve understanding of immune responses.
