About

Dr. Masumi Ueda Oshima is a board-certified physician and researcher at Fred Hutch, providing blood and marrow transplantation to patients with blood cancers. She studies ways to prevent complications after transplant.

Background

Dr. Ueda Oshima cares for patients with blood cancers such as leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. She specializes in blood and marrow transplant (BMT) and on managing complications that can occur after transplant, including graft versus host disease (GVHD), a condition in which donor immune cells attack a patient’s tissues. She also provides care in the Long Term Follow Up Program, supporting patients after BMT.

In parallel with patient care, Dr. Ueda Oshima conducts research focused on preventing complications after BMT, including GVHD and disease relapse. Her work aims to improve long term outcomes and quality of life for people who undergo BMT.

Area of Clinical Practice
Adult blood and marrow transplantation

“My goal is to make a shared decision in situations that are often difficult.”

What drew you to oncology?

Medicine is a unique field where science and the humanities intersect. During one summer in college, I worked in a clinic in Cleveland and I really enjoyed the opportunity to meet people, hear their stories and try to help them. My decision to go into cancer care was influenced by a mentor I had in medical school who gave a lecture on cancer biology and the development of imatinib, one of the first targeted drug therapies for cancer. Later, I had the opportunity to follow this same professor in an outpatient clinic, where I experienced the privilege of helping patients facing this disease. From that moment on, I never considered any other specialty.

What’s it like to work with you?

Treatment is a highly individualized pursuit on multiple levels, from the molecular to the humanistic; it should cater to your biology, unique situation, beliefs and life experiences. I strive to get to know who you are, educate you about your disease and treatment options and provide as much guidance as possible. I’m hopeful about the future of blood and bone marrow transplantation. While not every person is a good candidate for these procedures, we are constantly working to innovate new approaches and improve outcomes so that one day we can provide a cure for every patient.
