About

Dr. Matthew Triplette is a board-certified pulmonologist and researcher at Fred Hutch. He provides critical and pulmonary care, while studying how lung cancer screening, early detection and disparities affect people at high risk for thoracic cancers.

Provider Background

Dr. Triplette provides patient care in intensive care units and pulmonary clinics, emphasizing compassionate, team based care. He is the medical director of both the Lung Cancer Screening Program and Living Tobacco-Free Services at Fred Hutch.

Alongside patient care, Dr. Triplette conducts research focused on how to implement lung cancer screening in ways that save the most lives. His studies examine barriers and facilitators to screening, as well as disparities that affect who is screened and diagnosed early. He also studies lung disease and lung cancer in underserved and at risk populations, including people who are immunosuppressed, such as those with HIV or who had a prior organ transplant.

Area of Clinical Practice
High risk prevention, thoracic cancers, lung cancer early detection

“I believe that the safe, complex and state-of-the-art care that our patients deserve is most effectively delivered through a team-based approach.”

— Dr. Triplette

Why do you practice oncology?

Working in healthcare allows me to pursue a passion for science and discovery to improve overall population health for the future while also developing individual therapeutic relationships to help patients and families deal with disease with the best technology of today. Cancer patients and their families show the best of humanity. Their ability to face their illnesses with courage and dignity constantly inspires me. My primary research is to better understand how best to utilize lung cancer screening to save the most lives and make this an effective service for eligible patients. I also study lung disease and lung cancer in immune-suppressed patients, such as persons living with HIV, to understand unique risk factors in these populations. In the realm of lung cancer where we diagnose most cancers in advanced and incurable stages, I hope improvements in screening and detection lead to more early diagnoses and improved survival. Outside of work, I love spending time outdoors in and around Seattle. I enjoy hiking, biking, running and skiing. I love to travel (particularly for the food!) I also enjoy hanging out with my family and my pets.

Dr. Triplette has studied racial disparities in coronary artery disease, chronic lung disease in HIV patients, and community-based screening for HIV and lung cancer. His current collaborative studies focus on lung cancer screening practices in underserved and at-risk populations. He is leading Fred Hutch and University of Washington's efforts to examine the current implementation of lung cancer screening and better understand barriers, facilitators and potential disparities in screening practices. He is part of an ongoing clinical study of biomarkers of lung-related disease and has an ongoing interest in lung cancer in special at-risk populations, including immunosuppressed patients with HIV or prior organ transplant.
