Background
Dr. Salit is a hematologist oncologist who treats patients with blood cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma. on blood cancers. She cares for patients on the inpatient bone marrow transplant service and through the outpatient allogeneic transplant service, which follows patients closely during the first 100 days after transplant. She also frequently sees patients through Fred Hutch’s Long‑Term Follow‑Up Program, supporting them as they navigate life after transplant.
As a member of Fred Hutch’s Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant (UCBT) Research Program, Dr. Salit studies ways to improve long‑term outcomes for patients who receive cord blood transplants. Her research focuses on reducing infections, preventing serious transplant complications such as graft‑versus‑host disease (GVHD), lowering the risk of cancer relapse and improving quality of life after transplant.
Dr. Salit also has a strong research interest in treating myeloproliferative diseases, a group of slow‑growing blood cancers that includes myelofibrosis. Her work explores ways to improve stem cell engraftment and prevent GVHD in these patients. In addition, she is interested in survivorship and recovery after transplant, including helping patients return to work. She has developed return‑to‑work guidance for providers and is piloting a support program to assist patients during this transition.
Dr. Salit has authored multiple manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals about stem cell transplant, myelofibrosis and late-effects following stem cell transplant. She has given local, national and international talks and has been featured on podcasts on the topics of stem cell transplant for myelofibrosis and returning-to-work following transplant.
