About

Dr. Rachel B. Salit is a board-certified physician and researcher at Fred Hutch who specializes in providing blood and marrow transplants to patients with blood cancers.

Background

Dr. Salit is a hematologist oncologist who treats patients with blood cancers, such as leukemia and lymphoma. on blood cancers. She cares for patients on the inpatient bone marrow transplant service and through the outpatient allogeneic transplant service, which follows patients closely during the first 100 days after transplant. She also frequently sees patients through Fred Hutch’s Long‑Term Follow‑Up Program, supporting them as they navigate life after transplant.

As a member of Fred Hutch’s Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant (UCBT) Research Program, Dr. Salit studies ways to improve long‑term outcomes for patients who receive cord blood transplants. Her research focuses on reducing infections, preventing serious transplant complications such as graft‑versus‑host disease (GVHD), lowering the risk of cancer relapse and improving quality of life after transplant.

Dr. Salit also has a strong research interest in treating myeloproliferative diseases, a group of slow‑growing blood cancers that includes myelofibrosis. Her work explores ways to improve stem cell engraftment and prevent GVHD in these patients. In addition, she is interested in survivorship and recovery after transplant, including helping patients return to work. She has developed return‑to‑work guidance for providers and is piloting a support program to assist patients during this transition.

Dr. Salit has authored multiple manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals about stem cell transplant, myelofibrosis and late-effects following stem cell transplant. She has given local, national and international talks and has been featured on podcasts on the topics of stem cell transplant for myelofibrosis and returning-to-work following transplant.

Area of Clinical Practice

“I believe that medical care is a collaborative relationship.”

— Dr. Salit

What drew you to oncology?

After exploring different career paths in health care, I got a job in an inner-city hospital working for an inpatient team of doctors. Each day, I accompanied them on their busy rounds, taking histories and examining patients. Seeing these patients evolve from sick to well clinched it for me: I decided that providing hands-on medical care was what I wanted to do. Treating patients with cancer is a very intimate experience; you get to know their hopes and desires. To make someone better who has so much to live for — or to support someone who has not achieved a successful cure — is both extremely challenging and deeply rewarding.

What is your approach to care and treatment?

A cancer diagnosis can be traumatic — not only for you, but your whole support system. One of the reasons I became a hematologist-oncologist is that I really get to treat the whole person and not just their disease, so that’s the mindset I bring to our relationship. I aim to provide you with the most thorough information possible about your disease and my best medical opinion about how to move forward. I also value your autonomy and your voice; the ultimate decision about any particular treatment is yours. This philosophy has resulted in many positive long-term relationships with those I am privileged to care for.

Current Projects

Two protocols open for patients with myelofibrosis who are either considering or know they want to pursue stem cell transplant. The trials use JAK-inhibitors, a class of drug known to decrease symptoms and splenomegaly in patients with myelofibrosis to improve patients’ pre-transplant symptoms and performance status and decrease graft-vs.-host disease.

Opening a pilot intervention study to support post-transplant patients who wish to return to work post-transplant.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers.
