About

Dr. Armin Rashidi is an oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch. His clinical care in blood and marrow transplantation and cellular therapy is combined with research on how the microbiome affects outcomes after treatment for blood cancers.

Background

Dr. Rashidi cares for patients undergoing blood and marrow transplant (BMT) and cellular therapy. He focuses on treating people with blood cancers using intensive therapies that can offer the potential for a cure.

Transplants and cellular therapy can be life‑saving for some of the most aggressive blood cancers. Dr. Rashidi has led a multicenter clinical trial that studied chemotherapy combined with donor lymphocyte infusion, also known as DLI, for patients with acute leukemia that returned after BMT.

Dr. Rashidi’s research focuses on the microbiome, the community of bacteria that live in and on the human body, and how it influences patient outcomes after intensive blood cancer treatment. These treatments often involve chemotherapy and antibiotics, which can disrupt the microbiome. This disruption, called dysbiosis, can increase the risk of serious infections and affect treatment‑related complications.

Dr. Rashidi’s work examines how differences in individual microbiomes influence how patients respond to blood cancer treatments and how various therapies change the microbiome over time. Using these insights, Dr. Rashidi aims to develop better strategies to prevent and treat dysbiosis and improve outcomes for patients receiving treatment for blood cancers.

“At Fred Hutch, results from groundbreaking research are combined with the highest standard of care to offer the optimal treatment to each patient.”

Why did you choose oncology?

I became familiar with cancer from a young age, having seen how cancer affected my grandmother. With little knowledge at the time, cancer appeared like an incurable condition to me. I chose oncology to change this.

What is your approach to care and treatment?

I try to be creative. By combining conventional knowledge with new data coming from research, I try to individualize the care I offer. I let this paradigm evolve as the patient goes through different stages of treatment. Here at Fred Hutch, all aspects of care, from sharing information to acute care to chronic complications and social support, are equally considered. I am happy to be part of this large multidisciplinary team.
