About

Dr. Steven A. Pergam is a board‑certified infectious disease physician and researcher at Fred Hutch, specializing in epidemiology and infectious diseases. He focuses on preventing and treating infections in people with weakened immune systems due to cancer, chemotherapy or blood and marrow transplantation.

Background

Dr. Pergam’s work focuses on the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases in patients with compromised immune systems. In patient care and research, he specializes in protecting patients from serious complications, such as fungal infections and hospital‑acquired infections caused by antibiotic‑resistant microbes. Dr. Pergam is the medical director of the Fred Hutch Infection Prevention.

He studies how the human microbiome — the diverse community of microorganisms that live in and on the body — may influence complications in blood and marrow transplant recipients. He also tracks how respiratory viruses spread among immunocompromised patients and examines their unique transmission patterns.

Dr. Pergam also explores how patient care data can be used to improve vaccination rates, strengthen infection‑prevention strategies and develop new tools to predict outbreaks of viral respiratory infections. Through this work, he aims to improve safety and outcomes for patients at the highest risk of serious infections.
