About

Dr. Vivian Oehler is a board‑certified physician and researcher at Fred Hutch. She specializes in blood cancers and researches ways to understand and improve treatment for leukemia.

Background

Dr. Oehler cares for patients with blood cancers such as leukemia and blood disorders. She treats and supports patients through complex treatment decisions.

Her clinical and research interests focus on the molecular biology of chronic myeloid leukemia progression and how these disease features affect blood and marrow transplantation and treatment outcomes. Her research explores the genetic origins and drivers of leukemia and blood disorders, including why some patients do not respond to standard treatments such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors. These targeted drugs block chemical signals that promote cancer cell growth, but a significant minority of patients develop resistance over time.

Her lab works to identify predictive markers that could help determine which patients are more likely to develop resistance to therapy. In addition, her team develops and tests new drugs aimed at improving treatment options for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia and acute myeloid leukemia. Through this work, Dr. Oehler seeks to better tailor treatment approaches and improve outcomes for people with blood cancers.
