About

Dr. Bruce Montgomery is a board-certified physician and researcher at Fred Hutch who cares for patients with genitourinary malignancies, including prostate and bladder cancers, and researches these conditions.

Background

Dr. Montgomery has completed research into pathways of hormonal signaling in prostate cancer, mechanisms of resistance and sensitivity to DNA damage in bladder cancer and ways to advance precision oncology by improving systems that provide patients with access to genetics.

Area of Clinical Practice
Genitourinary cancers

“We want to provide the best care, all the time, for every patient. This means offering treatment tailored to each person according to your needs and enhancing your quality of life.”

— Dr. Montgomery

Do you have a favorite memory from your work to share?

One of my best memories has been working on a study where we were trying to figure out the molecular changes that happen in prostate cancer. One of the people on that study turned out to have a genetic alteration that made his cancer susceptible to immunotherapy, and as a result we were able to get rid of his very advanced cancer. We still see each other many years later because we both were so invested at the time and we have always wanted to continue to relive that synthesis of research and care that had so much impact.

What brought you to oncology?

I went into oncology because I knew that I would get to know every patient exceptionally well because of the unique relationship that develops in the field of genitourinary cancers. Research is a major reason that I work in oncology, but it is the individuals that I see and know that are the primary reason I am at Fred Hutch.
