About

Dr. Arjun Law is a hematologist and researcher at Fred Hutch who specializes in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prevention.

Background

Dr. Law focuses on helping patients safely receive stem cell transplants and reducing complications, particularly with GVHD, which can occur when donor immune cells attack a patient’s healthy tissues after a transplant.

Dr. Law’s research is on improving outcomes after allogeneic stem cell transplantation, with an emphasis on new strategies to prevent GVHD and expand transplant options for more patients. His work has explored alternative donor approaches and methods to make transplantation safer and less toxic, especially for older or more medically vulnerable individuals.

He has developed and published research on in vivo T-cell depletion, a technique designed to lower the risk of both acute and chronic GVHD while preserving the transplant’s ability to treat leukemia. More recently, Dr. Law’s research has focused on post-transplant cyclophosphamide and other approaches aimed at reducing side effects and making stem cell transplantation more accessible.

Through his clinical work and research, Dr. Law works to translate advances in transplant science into safer, more effective treatments for patients with blood disorders.

Area of Clinical Practice
Adult allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

“I appreciate being with patients over the long term. Seeing patients reclaiming their lives after having gone through the extraordinary challenge of transplantation — returning to health and going on to thrive — is a reminder of why I do this work.”

— Dr. Law

What brought you to becoming a physician focused on blood and marrow and stem cell transplantation?

I chose this field because it sits at the crossroads of discovery and humanity. The science is racing ahead — new ways of preventing graft-vs.-host disease, safer regimens, and cellular therapies that a decade ago would have sounded like science fiction. But the real victories are people getting back to family dinners or weekend plans.

Equitable access to transplantation matters to me just as much as outcomes. Not everyone has the same chance of finding a donor, and that’s not acceptable. A lot of my work has been about widening access and reducing complications, so more patients from more backgrounds have a fair shot.

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

I see myself as a navigator, helping patients and families traverse a complex and often difficult path. While transplant relies on highly regimented protocols, I believe each plan must be individualized to reflect a patient’s own goals and expectations. Success in medicine isn’t always defined the same way by patients and physicians.

By the time people arrive at the transplantation stage, they’ve usually been through more than their fair share of difficult diagnoses, tough treatments and hard choices. My role is to help steer patients and their families through what is often the hardest stretch. I will listen, align and guide so that the treatment path honors both medical science and what matters most to the person in front of me.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Publications

Many of our Fred Hutch physicians and researchers conduct ongoing research to improve standards of patient care. Their work is evaluated by others in their field and selected for publication to the United States National Library of Medicine, the largest medical library in the world.
