Dr. Noam Kopmar is a hematologist-oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch. He specializes in blood and marrow transplantation and cellular immunotherapy for blood cancers.

Background

Dr. Kopmar is board certified in medical oncology, hematology and internal medicine. He treats patients with leukemia and lymphoma undergoing blood and marrow transplant and immune-based treatments.

He is actively involved in clinical trials and outcomes research in acute leukemia. He is especially interested in how expanded treatment options and recent advances have improved outcomes for people with acute leukemia and other blood cancers. His research focuses on understanding disease risk stratification and the factors that influence prognosis, with the goal of better tailoring treatment approaches to each individual patient.

Dr. Kopmar received the American Society of Clinical Oncology Conquer Cancer Merit Award in 2023 for his work on frontline therapy for patients with relapsed or refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia or lymphoma.

“I want to be someone that patients can trust, and know that I will not take this trust for granted.”

— Dr. Kopmar

What brought you to oncology?

When I was in my first year of medical school, my father was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a particularly aggressive form of blood cancer. This occurred during a very formative time in my medical training, and I became interested in the disease biology of blood cancers, their clinical presentations, and their impact on patients and families: ultimately, this led me to a career focused on blood cancer treatment. I have been motivated to see the how much treatment options have advanced for blood cancers in the last decade, largely due to ongoing research efforts at institutions like the Fred Hutch.

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

A cancer diagnosis can be one of the biggest challenges anyone can go through. I want to provide informed, expert care, and also relate on a personal, human level and meet people where they are.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
