What do you hope patients experience when they are in your care?

For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to help people. If I can play a role in making a challenging experience a little bit better for a patient going through diagnosis or treatment for breast cancer, that’s what I love to do.

I hope patients feel that I care, that I’m paying attention and that I’m listening carefully to them. I also want people to feel that they can trust me. I have had my own experiences, particularly with my dad who was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer and lymphoma within the span of a month. I was able to attend some of his appointments and it made such a difference to me when I felt like the doctor really cared about my dad. It was humbling to realize how much that mattered to me.

What brought you to diagnostic radiology?

I was drawn to radiology in general because I love anatomy and figuring out what is going on with a patient. Giving someone a diagnosis — getting them an answer — I really enjoy that part of it. I also enjoy doing procedures. While a lot of diagnostic radiology can be removed from direct patient care, breast imaging is an integral part of taking care of patients as part of the breast care team along with the medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgeons, advanced practice providers and other care team members. We’re integrated into the team, we make specific recommendations and we get to talk to patients and offer procedures to patients who are awake. There’s a whole element of trying to make it as good of an experience as possible for the patient during the procedure, but also the whole diagnostic process. I really get a lot of satisfaction out of this, and it gives me a lot of meaning.
