About

Dr. Hiba Khan is a board-certified physician and researcher at Fred Hutch. She specializes in genitourinary cancers and leads research focused on improving access, affordability and quality of cancer care.

Background

Dr. Khan is a medical oncologist who treats prostate, bladder and testicular cancers. She cares for patients across the course of their disease and actively enrolls people in clinical trials as part of the genitourinary cancer research team.

Her research focuses on the health economics of cancer care, studying how the costs of treatment affect patients’ access to care and clinical outcomes. Her work aims to better understand financial hardship associated with cancer treatment, particularly for people receiving therapy for prostate cancer, and to identify ways to make high-quality cancer care more accessible and affordable. She conducts this work through the Hutchinson Institute for Cancer Outcomes Research.

Dr. Khan received both a Young Investigator Award and a Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology in 2023. She has presented during the OncLive On Air® podcast about financial toxicity in patients with cancer, and her research has also been featured in Oncology Times and UroToday.

“I appreciate developing long-term relationships with patients and their families and guiding treatment plans that reflect their values.”

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

My goal is to make sure people understand all treatment options available and for patients to have access to leading therapies and clinical trials. Considering individual preferences and wishes, we work together to create a plan that makes the most sense for each person.

A diagnosis of cancer is a life-changing event, with a huge impact on the lives of patients and their loved ones. I aim to support and guide you through this challenging time, and recognize how important it is to build trust with an oncologist.

What do you find motivating or inspiring about your work?

Many incredible and exciting scientific advancements and discoveries in the field of genitourinary cancers have taken place in the last several years. Because of these advances, we are not only improving treatments but also quality of life for patients.

As a member of the Hutchinson Institute for Cancer Outcomes Research (HICOR), my research focuses on the health economics of cancer care. From my patients, I have learned that being able to receive treatment depends on many factors — some of which have nothing to do with the cancer. I study ways to improve the affordability and accessibility of cancer care and strive to improve the quality of its delivery. I continue to learn from my patients’ experiences, which drives my research and my desire to make the health care system better for patients.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
