About

Dr. Lorenzo Iovino is a hematologist-oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch. He treats patients with blood cancers who are undergoing blood and marrow transplantation while researching the next generation of immunotherapies.

Background

Dr. Iovino helps guide patients with blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, through complex therapies that use chemotherapy and immune-based approaches such as cellular immunotherapy.

He conducts research focused on developing the next generation of immunotherapy treatments and understanding how to harness the immune system to better treat cancer, including CAR T-cell therapy. Another key area of Dr. Iovino’s work is studying how the immune system rebuilds itself after cancer-related treatments, with the goal of improving recovery and long-term outcomes for patients.

Area of Clinical Practice
Blood and marrow transplantation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy

“Unfortunately, cancer has been a presence in my life since I was a child. Many people in my family suffered because of it, and many friends, too. Providing care for people with cancer allows me to help.”

— Dr. Iovino

What brought you to Fred Hutch?

Top research also means top care. To me, care is a mixture of knowledge, readiness and empathy. Harnessing the immune system against cancer cells can be a potential cure for many types of cancer. I also study the reconstitution of the immune system after cancer-related treatments.

What patient moment sticks with you?

After several cycles of therapy, and after a long time in the hospital for an autologous bone marrow transplant, I was happy to hear that a 70-year-old patient was able to get back to riding their bike.

Diseases Treated

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Aplastic Anemia

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

Hodgkin Lymphoma

Lymphoma

Multiple Myeloma

Myeloproliferative Neoplasms

Dr. Iovino is interested in the reconstitution of the immune system, with a specific focus on T lymphocytes. He authored several publications on the role of the thymus, the primary organ responsible to produce T lymphocytes, and on the contribution of the micronutrient zinc to thymic and T cell health. He is also interested in finding novel biomarkers to predict the outcome and modify the current approaches for patients who are candidate to cellular therapies.
