About

Dr. Jordan Gauthier is a hematologist-oncologist and researcher who cares for patients at the Fred Hutch. He sees patients undergoing blood and marrow transplant and cellular immunotherapy, while researching how to improve these treatments for blood cancers.

Background

Dr. Gauthier is the medical director for the Immunotherapy Long-Term Follow-Up Program who specializes in blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. His clinical expertise includes overseeing patients undergoing blood and marrow transplant (BMT) and cellular immunotherapies.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Gauthier works to develop and improve cellular immunotherapies for blood cancers, including BMT and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, a treatment that engineers a patient’s T cells to better recognize and attack tumors. His research focuses on improving outcomes for patients receiving these therapies and identifying factors that can help predict which people will benefit the most. Dr. Gauthier designs and leads clinical trials and develops statistical and machine-learning models, along with web-based tools, to help physicians and patients better understand and anticipate how cellular therapies may work for them. His work also includes international research collaborations through the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

Area of Clinical Practice
Adult blood and marrow transplantation, cellular immunotherapy

“I see every patient encounter as a precious opportunity to help, engage and learn.”

— Dr. Gauthier

Why do you practice hematology-oncology?

The meaningful connections I make with patients are part of what I enjoy about this specialty. One of my favorite memories is bonding with a patient who was undergoing a bone marrow transplant. He was a talented engineer and would show me pictures of all the amazing objects he built. He also taught me all about Japanese dog breeds and, I hope, I was able to teach him about the workings of the immune system. Not only did we develop an easy rapport, but we learned from each other, and I was grateful I could accompany him on his journey.

What’s it like to work with you?

I strive to be mindful of your life story beyond your disease, learning about your goals for care, your support system and what activities bring you joy. Depending on your interest and level of comfort, I like to share with you what’s going on beneath the surface of a symptom or disease process, discussing the biology of what’s happening so you know why you aren’t feeling well — or why you’re feeling better. As much as possible, I try to prepare you for what to expect during the treatment process so that you aren’t caught off guard by symptoms or side effects.
