About

Dr. Danai Dima is a board-certified physician and researcher at Fred Hutch. She provides care for people with multiple myeloma and related plasma cell disorders, while researching how to improve outcomes with immune-based therapies.

Background

Dr. Dima specializes in caring for patients with diseases caused by abnormal growth of plasma cells, including multiple myeloma, light chain amyloidosis, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), POEMS syndrome and smoldering myeloma.

Dr. Dima combines patient care with a strong research focus on improving treatment outcomes. She studies how patients with multiple myeloma respond to newer immune-based treatments, including chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies (which use a patient’s own immune cells to target cancer) and bispecific antibodies, which are designed to help immune cells recognize and attack cancer cells. By closely examining patient outcomes, she aims to better understand how these therapies perform in real-world settings and how care can be further refined.

She is a member of the U.S. Multiple Myeloma Immunotherapy Consortium and has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications, reflecting her active role in advancing the field.

“I value good communication. From our very first meeting, my goal is to focus on who a patient is as a person, not only on their disease.”

— Dr. Dima

How do you like to work with patients?

I prefer to function as a team to develop a personalized treatment plan that works for people — for their life, not just for their cancer. Maintaining a good quality of life is very important, and it is my goal for patients to go back to their daily routine despite being diagnosed with cancer. I love educating patients so they can understand their disease and the treatments used. The more involved patients are in their care, the better the outcomes.

Do you have any favorite memories of a patient you’d like to share?

One of my patients was wheelchair-bound and in very bad shape when I first saw her. Six months later, she was able to dance at her son’s wedding.

I have a lot of great memories, but in general, it is very rewarding to see patients getting remarkably better with therapy and going back to their routine or doing things they are excited to do.

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
