About

Dr. Eric Chow is a pediatric oncologist and epidemiologist at Fred Hutch who leads research focused on childhood cancer survivorship.

Background

Dr. Chow helps people live healthier lives after cancer treatment, with expertise in survivors of childhood cancers and blood stem cell transplantation across all ages. His work focuses on understanding and addressing the long-term (late) effects of cancer therapies, which are health issues that can appear months or years after treatment ends.

Much of Dr. Chow’s research examines why some cancer survivors develop conditions such as heart disease and other cardiovascular complications, and the risk factors linked to this. He studies a range of contributing factors including prior cancer treatments, underlying genetics and health conditions such as obesity. By identifying these risks, he aims to improve how late effects can be prevented, detected earlier and treated more effectively.

Working closely with other care providers, Dr. Chow designs and leads clinical trials that test strategies to help survivors maintain and improve their long-term health. His research spans large-scale analyses of medical records as well as clinical trials of interventions designed to promote healthier outcomes.

Area of Clinical Practice
Pediatric cancer, survivorship

“I want to help improve cure rates for childhood cancer and increase the quality of life for children and families overcoming cancer.”

— Dr. Chow

What are your goals as a researcher?

I focus on survivors of childhood cancers to help them live healthier lives by preventing, detecting and treating late effects of cancer therapies. I am interested in better understanding the burden and risk factors for cardiovascular outcomes after childhood cancer therapy and stem cell transplantation.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
