About

Dr. Naveed Ali is a hematologist-oncologist and researcher who cares for people with blood cancers receiving a blood and marrow transplant or cellular therapy at Fred Hutch. His clinical and research work focuses on improving outcomes before and after transplant.

Background

Dr. Ali’s clinical work focuses on supporting patients before, during and after blood and marrow transplant to promote safe recovery and long-term disease control.

His research evaluates new treatment regimens used in blood stem cell transplantation, including conditioning therapies that prepare, or condition, patients for transplant and post-transplant approaches that help patients recover and stay cancer-free after treatment. Through his combined roles as a provider and researcher, he aims to improve survival while minimizing the side effects of intensive transplant care.

Area of Clinical Practice
Blood and marrow transplantation

“I chose cancer as a specialty after seeing the advancements in the field. Patients are being cured, and that is what excites me. The philosophy behind immunotherapy is to cure lethal diseases which otherwise have no cure. I am so excited to work alongside compassionate, empathetic, competent practitioners delivering leading edge treatments that come from the application of the latest research. Every day we're uncovering new discoveries and making progress against cancer.”

— Dr. Ali

How would you describe your approach to care?

Bone marrow transplant is a lengthy and complicated treatment. With too much information too quickly, patients can become lost. My entire practice revolves around guiding my patients, step-by-step. This balance of providing comfort and support while delivering information helps me build the patient's trust.

What do you like best about working in immunology?

Bringing a patient through the bone marrow transplant process is difficult and harrowing, but it's also incredibly rewarding. Treatment can be very hard on the body, and some patients can become so empty inside. I can't wait for the day that they’re on the other side, and the treatment is working and they're improving. Watching a patient go through recovery, the color comes back in their face, the energy comes back to them and they go on with their lives — it's one of the most gratifying things I could ever ask for.
