“One of the things I enjoy most is talking to patients every day and building relationships with them,” Au Yong said. “I try to make treatment as comfortable and stress-free as possible while delivering uncompromising care. And I also enjoy working with the team of skilled therapists at the facility. I've learned so much from them!”
Au Yong was born and raised in Seattle, the second youngest of six boys. He attended the University of Washington, studying microbiology, then after graduation went on to study radiation therapy. He completed a Bachelor of Applied Science degree at Bellevue College, which was where he first learned about proton therapy.
In the Bellevue College program, students do three-month clinical rotations at the proton therapy facility. During this time, students work under close supervision of the Fred Hutch radiation therapists to get hands-on experience delivering care.
“What really interested me in proton therapy is how the physical characteristics of protons allow us to spare more healthy tissue while delivering higher doses to treat tumors, thus resulting in fewer side effects for patients," he said. "This is especially important when treating tumors close to critical organs as well as when treating pediatric patients who are still growing and developing.”
Au Yong says he’s inspired by his patients, especially by their resilience and positivity despite all they are going through.
“It really changes your perspective on life,” he said. “I'm very grateful to be part of their treatment."
Outside of work, Au Yong enjoys jogging, pickleball, hiking and trying new foods. One of his favorite restaurants is a Korean BBQ spot in Totem Lake conveniently located next door to ice cream chain Salt and Straw.
“Ice cream almost always follows dinner,” he said.
Au Yong also plays Magic the Gathering with his friends, a strategy card game that originated in Seattle. He and his friends play several times a month.
“I love playing games with friends and family,” he said. “I love anything that makes me laugh!”
