SeattleStatSummer for Biomedical Data Science Research Training is an 8-week, mentored, paid summer research internship experience in statistics and data science in biomedical research. In partnership with Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute, this program is aimed at increasing awareness and interest in careers in statistics and data science research.
The program is open to undergraduates enrolled or intending to enroll in a 2- or 4-year college. The program is specifically designed for students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical science. Students who have an interest in statistics, biostatistics, informatics, or data science are encouraged to apply; no prior experience is needed.
Students are paired with a mentor to complete projects within the fields of statistics and data science. Additionally, students participate in intensive R programming training, attend professional development workshops, and engage in social activities.
The 2023 program will run from Monday, June 26, through Friday, August 18, 2023. Students must be able to commit to participating for the full 8 weeks.

All students participating in a summer program or internship at Fred Hutch or Kaiser Permanente must be fully vaccinated* against COVID-19, and agree to follow all COVID-19 safety guidelines while on campus. Proof of vaccination will be required.
*People are considered fully vaccinated 2 weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.

Intensive Analytics Bootcamp
During the first week, students meet as a cohort for an intensive analytics bootcamp training that mainly consists of the fundamentals of statistical measurement & modeling and R programming. The program condenses months-long instructions into 8 weeks through workshops, seminars, and activities. Throughout the program, students will receive daily help sessions and weekly informatics and data science sessions to solidify their understanding of bioinformatics.
Mentored Research
Starting on week 2 of the program, students will work with their assigned mentors on a research project. On the last day of the program, students will present their research at the Research Symposium and Reflection.
Career Development
Every week, students will participate in career development workshops where they will learn important professional skills to enhance their confidence and comfort in interacting with other researchers. The purpose of these sessions is to help students feel enabled to take the next steps towards successful research careers as scientific investigators.
Community Support
To encourage community building and a sense of belonging, students will learn the career journeys of a diverse group of faculty members from various institutions and outline their own personal journeys. Additionally, students have the option to participate in community outings with students from other Fred Hutch internship programs.
Students receive a stipend of $6,650 for the summer and a free ORCA card for Seattle-area public transportation.
Additional funding is available for research-related expenses and group meals. Students will also be provided with a laptop and the necessary software for the length of the program.
