High School and Undergraduate Students

COVID-19 Contingency Notice

Our education programs will accept applications, with the understanding that the final format of the programs will depend upon an evidenced-based understanding of the risk posed by COVID-19. If possible, the programs will run as expected and described. However, given the pandemic, the format of the programs may be virtual, or a hybrid of virtual and on-campus. The duration of our programs may also be impacted. We will provide updates as more information becomes available closer to the program start dates.

All students participating in a summer program or internship at Fred Hutch must be fully vaccinated* against COVID-19, and agree to follow all COVID-19 safety guidelines while on campus. Proof of vaccination will be required.

*Please note that only the primary series of a COVID-19 vaccine is required; booster vaccines are not required at this time.

Hands-On Learning Experiences and Guidance From Mentors

We offer paid internships for graduate students, undergraduates and high school students throughout our organization. Each internship program offers valuable learning opportunities that support academic and career goals.

High School Internship Programs

For high school students who are interested in science, hands-on experience alongside pioneering researchers in biological sciences, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, cancer prevention, epidemiology and biostatistics can be life-changing. Many of our past interns have gone on to pursue rewarding careers in biomedical research and medicine.

Summer High School Internship (SHIP)

The SHIP is an eight-week paid internship for high school students includes one week of hands-on training in laboratory techniques and safety skills followed by seven weeks of supervised work in a Fred Hutch faculty member’s research lab. Interns also attend weekly workshops and seminars and make a presentation during the final week.

Lab Tech Certificate Program

The Lab Tech Certificate Program for high school students combines lab technical skills training over two summers at Fred Hutch with academic training at Shoreline Community College. After the first summer, students enroll in Running Start for their senior year. They continue their coursework at Shoreline Community College the year after the second summer of lab skills training.

Cancer Research Internship for New Mexico State University Undergraduates

This nine-week paid summer internship provides experience and mentorship for underrepresented New Mexico State University undergraduates who are interested in biomedical research. Interns select an area of interest and work with a faculty mentor to complete an independent research project. The program includes workshops for preparing applications for graduate or medical school, as well as social activities.

Pathways Undergraduate Researchers

In this nine-week paid summer program, interns are matched with a host lab and are immersed in mentored research, a cancer biology education series, professional development workshops and social activities. One goal of the program is to give students from underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to explore their research-related career interests.

Infectious Disease Sciences Summer Scholars Internship Program

In this six to eight week paid summer program in Infectious Disease Sciences (IDS), your work will focus on infections on immunosuppressed populations (those with weakened immune systems) such as cancer and transplant patients. Opportunities include conducting a hands-on research project with faculty mentors, clinical shadowing, laboratory observation and practical experience. Promoting diversity and inclusion is a central focus of the program, candidates from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, first-generation college students, students from low socio-economic backgrounds, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

SeattleStatSummer for Biomedical Data Science Research Training

SeattleStatSummer for Biomedical Data Science Research Training for undergraduates is an eight-week comprehensive summer internship experience in statistics and data science in biomedical research. In partnership with Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute, this program provides a mentored research experience aimed at increasing awareness of and interest in pursuing careers in statistics and data science research.

Small University Undergraduate Summer Internship

Students from Pacific Lutheran University and Seattle Pacific University who are pursuing a degree in biology, biochemistry or chemistry are eligible for this nine-week summer program in Fred Hutch’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division. Interns help with basic laboratory maintenance and research; at the end of the summer, they give presentations detailing their research projects.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

The SURP is an intensive, nine-week internship for undergraduates entering the summer before their final year, semester, or quarter of study. It’s designed to provide research experience and mentorship for students interested in biomedical research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, interns will complete an independent research project and present their findings at a competitive poster session.

Graduate Internship Programs

Our internships for graduate students provide experience, mentorship from Fred Hutch scientists and career planning guidance.

Cancer Research Internship for New Mexico State University Graduates

The Partnership for the Advancement of Cancer Research (PACR) offers internship opportunities for New Mexico State University undergraduate and graduate students to conduct independent research projects at Fred Hutch. Visit the PACR webpage for more information about the Cancer Research Internship for NMSU Undergraduates (CRI-U) and the Cancer Research Internship for NMSU Graduate Students (CRI-G).

Other Internships and Positions

At Fred Hutch, we rely on a wide array of scientific and non-scientific staff in our quest to save lives and advance knowledge. In addition to the programs above, individual research labs and administrative departments (e.g. Research Administration, Environmental Health & Safety) may offer internships throughout the year, which you can search for on our careers page. Current undergraduates and recent graduates can search our careers page for work study and paid positions in your area of interest and which fit your experience level.
