Fred Hutch Cancer Center physicians and scientists are working to improve treatment for sickle cell disease through research and clinical trials.

Clinical trials evaluate promising new therapies and new ways to use existing treatments. Research conducted today helps improve care for future patients and may expand treatment options for people living with sickle cell disease.

Sickle Cell Disease Clinical Trials 

Fred Hutch typically has over 800 active cancer clinical trials enrolling participants. 

Clinical trials may allow some patients access to a promising new treatment, and help physicians and researchers learn more about a disease. 

Advancing Sickle Cell Disease Treatment

Fred Hutch researchers are involved in studies to develop and evaluate:

  • Better ways to perform blood and marrow transplants 
  • Novel medicines to improve anemia, reduce the need for blood transfusions and decrease pain episodes 
  • Gene therapies designed to stop red blood cells from sickling and prevent pain and organ damage 

Our goal is to improve treatment outcomes while reducing side effects and helping people live healthier lives.

Our Sickle Cell Disease Researchers and Faculty

Our scientists and providers work together to prevent, diagnose and treat sickle cell disease as well as cancers and other blood diseases. The lab research and clinical research they do are essential parts of the scientific process that leads to new treatments and better care. Many of our sickle cell disease providers also do research in addition to seeing patients. Clinical trials can also be a way for patients to get early access to new leading-edge therapies. Our research teams are running many clinical studies for people with sickle cell disease.
