Surgery

“What I strive to do with patients is to include the human element. Patients come from all walks of life, and I aim to understand their perspective when discussing their diagnosis and current experience.”

— Tamar

What do you hope it’s like for a patient who is in your care?

It’s my goal to be as prepared as possible for every appointment. This builds trust and confidence for people, and they know they are being taken care of and being thought about prior to the appointment. I want to know what's going on and the details of their case, and I want patients to feel confident and to validate their feelings. In general, I want to meet them where they are. What are their goals? What do they see as the next steps? I don’t want to assume that people want or don't want certain things, so I try to provide space to hear them and understand what is important to each person.

What do you value about your work?

I love interacting with patients. I think every person is unique and I take every opportunity to get to know patients and their families to understand their goals, where they’re coming from and what drives them. At the same time, I am very interested in surgical planning, including reviewing imaging, discussions around surgical approaches, as well as management of postoperative complications. I also appreciate providing post-operative care and planning for any potential complications and how to manage them.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
