Hematology-Oncology
My first experience with cancer was teaching art therapy at my university cancer center. In medical school, cancer became personal when my uncle was diagnosed with leukemia, which was overwhelming for my family. This inspired me to pursue hematology-oncology, as I wanted to help cancer patients and families in a time of need.
In a rapidly changing field with new therapies, my goal is to guide patients through their cancer care. My philosophy is to engage in shared decision-making, practice evidence-based medicine, and help advance cancer treatments with access to research and clinical trials for patients.
My favorite memories are the "small talk" with patients and developing close relationships. I love getting to know patient's pets (from African grey parrots to goats to German shepherds), how they meet their spouse (a bar fight in the Vietnam War), their hobbies, their celebrations (starting vanlife after beating cancer) and more. During the cancer journey, that human connection is so important.
I am a hematologist-oncologist who sees patients at Fred Hutch at EvergreenHealth.
I am trained to treat a variety of hematology and oncology diseases, and my focus is on lung, head and neck cancer. I am particularly interested in targeted therapy and understanding driver mutations as a more personalized way to treat patients with cancer. I have done research on lung, head and neck cancer, as well as quality of life and supportive care, that has been presented at national oncology conferences and published in oncology journals.
We do all we can to help our patients get the best possible care. We bring research programs to the community, so our patients have access to clinical trials and new treatments. I truly believe this is the best place for cancer care.
