Integrative Medicine

“I want to help each person feel seen and heard. We have many wonderful, effective therapies, but I’ve learned from patients that the real truth of the matter is we all want these same things.”

— Dr. Price

What brought you to oncology and what do you value about your work?

I started my path toward oncology with mushrooms — mycology and the mycelial network and how they grow. We have so much to learn from the ecological community in terms of the interdependency of ecosystems. I began as a research scientist, but I was intrigued by naturopathic medicine because the paradigm is preventive rather than waiting for disease to happen, with nutrition, diet and exercise as a basis for health. While I’ve always respected conventional medical care, I realized we still have a lot to learn and that these approaches might be better for the planet; healthy people, healthy planet.

I have a rather intense curiosity of the world and a very strong motivation for justice. We’re all trying to make a difference and we can get discouraged, so when I see where I can have an impact, I want to make one.

Do you have any patient stories you’d like to share?

Nearly a decade ago, I had been caring for a patient through two experiences with cancer and heard from her that it had returned as triple-negative breast cancer. She was told there wasn’t anything more that could be done. I knew there were clinical trials going on at Fred Hutch, so I urged her to reach out, and she was able to get into a trial. I ran into her at the grocery store a couple years ago — she’s been in complete remission and cancer-free since.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Integrative medicine

I am a physician who sees patients at the South Lake Union Clinic.

I am part of the Greenlee Studies Group, and we provide complementary and integrative medicine to support patients with cancer. My focus is on safe and science-informed practices, such as culinary nutrition, mind-body techniques, exercise and review of any supplements to make sure they’re not interacting with prescribed medications.

In addition to studying turkey tail, reishi and lion’s mane mushrooms for their mechanisms of action, I have also written nutrition-focused cookbooks for patients living through cancer treatment.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
