Medical Oncology

“I believe that I am here to be an educator and a patient advocate. I value being able to help patients navigate and make informed decisions with regard to treatment and care with the best available evidence. I want to help my patients make the best decisions for their health and well-being.”

— James

Why do you practice oncology?

Before becoming a physician assistant, I spent eight years working as a firefighter and paramedic. I later graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Health and began my career in family practice in St. Helens, Oregon. My passion for service and care is what ultimately drew me to Fred Hutch.

Medicine is much more than a job to me. I wake up every morning excited to go to work. That enthusiasm comes from the dynamic environment of collaborating with a multidisciplinary team and from knowing I can make a lasting impact on every patient I work with. The unique challenges faced by both patients and providers inspired me to pursue a career in cancer care. I consider it a privilege to walk alongside those who are fighting this disease with hope and honesty.

I also value the opportunity to promote better screening methods that lead to safer, more effective cancer treatments.

Provider Background

Area of Clinical Practice
Immunotherapy

I am a board-certified physician assistant who sees patients at the Sloan Clinic and Fred Hutch at UW Medical Center - Montlake. I am part of a team that is responsible for taking care of patients receiving medications that activate their body's own immune cells to attack cancer. It is exciting and rewarding work.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
