Infectious Disease

“We focus on helping patients feel more comfortable, answering questions and helping them get back on their feet so they can focus on their cancer treatment. Our job is to make their life with cancer easier.”

— Dr. Ford

What’s your favorite part of your work at Fred Hutch?

When I first meet people, it’s usually not how they’d prefer to meet anyone – they are often stuck in bed, immunocompromised and facing a threatening infection. While I look forward to seeing people in the outpatient clinic, dressed in their regular clothes instead of a hospital gown and looking confident and happy, the patients who are dealing with a threatening infection can be just as inspiring. Those challenges can be really rewarding.

What brought you to study and treat infectious disease?

My mother-in-law had acute myeloid leukemia (AML) when I was an intern. Her infectious disease physician was her favorite person on her care team. It made me realize how critical the study of infectious disease was when people are immunocompromised.
