“I can confidently say that I would recommend Fred Hutch to patients, family and friends — because I trusted them with my own cancer care.”

— Christen

How has cancer affected you personally?

I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma during my final year of nursing school. In many ways, I knew exactly what a diagnosis of lymphoma meant, but no amount of medical knowledge prepared me to become a patient. Fortunately, I received a very effective chemotherapy regimen at Fred Hutch. I was able to finish my undergraduate studies and pursue my graduate degree. I now have the great privilege of working primarily with patients who have acute and chronic leukemias, and while their diagnoses and treatments may be very different from my own, I have an appreciation for the physical, mental and emotional aspects of undergoing cancer treatment.

What’s it like to work with you?

My approach to care is best summarized with the Latin phrase “cura personalis,” which means “care of the whole person.” Cancer care is more than chemotherapy; it affects patients and their caregivers physically, mentally, emotionally and financially. I aim to address all of your needs whenever possible by practicing evidence-based medicine, listening attentively to your concerns and helping you navigate obstacles that arise throughout treatment.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
