Nephrology

“I try to be a good steward of the specialty I practice. To me, this means evaluating each patient in a holistic manner, including not only the medical and scientific aspects of their disease process, but also their lived experiences, values, concerns and belief systems.”

— Dr. Malik

What do you value about your work?

Nephrology requires an in-depth review of pathological processes that affect multiple bodily systems at the same time. The breadth of the specialty and advances in treatment avenues continually remind me why I became a physician.

Often the patients I see are coping not only with cancer but also with kidney disease and other complications, either as a direct consequence of cancer or its treatment. Clinical experience and a keen interest in understanding the mechanisms behind cancer-associated kidney disease has uniquely prepared me to partner with my hematology-oncology colleagues in providing high-quality care in a multidisciplinary setting.

Do you have any interesting stories to share?

A lovely grandmother taught me about the value of a life well lived. She felt contentment in the years spent with her adoring family and had a strength of character that gave her the ability to seamlessly choose a palliative pathway when an aggressive approach to ongoing treatment might have been reflexively chosen. She had progressed into end-stage kidney disease, and with a clear mind and intent, despite some disagreement from her family and my plans of initiating treatment with dialysis, she preferred quality of life over quantity. She was so at peace with her decision that I just could not muster any counter to her dismissal of dialysis. I often remember my interactions with her and sometimes wonder if I would have the same courage in a similiar setting.
