About

Dr. Scott S. Tykodi is a board-certified medical oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch who treats kidney and skin cancers and leads clinical trials developing immunotherapies.

Background

Dr. Tykodi’s clinical work is closely integrated with his research, which focuses on translating immunotherapy advances from the lab into patient care for the treatment of kidney and skin cancers.

Dr. Tykodi is involved in the clinical application and translational study of natural and induced T cell immunotherapies that target renal cell carcinoma, kidney cancer and melanoma. His research includes leading clinical trials of novel immune based treatments and developing a new cellular immunotherapy for kidney cancer aimed at the 5T4 marker, a protein found on the surface of most kidney cancer cells and rarely on healthy adult cells. His work aims to bring promising immune therapies more quickly and effectively to patients.

“I believe patient education is a critical part of cancer care. Knowledge is power.”

— Dr. Tykodi

What's the focus of your work?

I’m a medical oncologist who treats patients with kidney cancer and melanoma. I’m particularly interested in the application of immune therapies to treat cancer. At Fred Hutch, we aim to give you access to promising new treatments like these by offering you the option to participate in clinical trials. We want to present these opportunities to you right away, instead of having you wait. In the past, it could take days for newly diagnosed patients to obtain opinions from multiple specialists. Now we’re hopeful you can get all the information you need in a single visit to the Kidney Cancer Multispecialty Clinic or the Multidisciplinary Skin Oncology Clinic to begin making informed decisions about your care. After helping to design your initial treatment plan, I continue working closely with your other specialists to provide coordinated care throughout your time as a patient.

What’s your approach to my care?

My goal is to keep you in control of your cancer journey. I believe patient education is a critical part of cancer care. Knowledge is power. What I love about working at Fred Hutch is our multidisciplinary clinic. You’re anxious to be seen as quickly as possible. By having specialists work together, we’re accelerating timelines. In a single appointment, you’re evaluated by me or another medical oncologist, a urologist and a radiation oncologist. Receiving opinions from three specialty providers in real time is a great advantage for you and your referring physician, because a comprehensive treatment plan is laid out very quickly. With this streamlined approach, we hope you’ll know of every available treatment option from your very first visit.

Clinical Trials
