About

Dr. Michael J. Shen is a board-certified physician and researcher who cares for patients with gastrointestinal diseases at Fred Hutch. Dr. Shen specializes in gastrointestinal cancer screening and surveillance.

Area of Clinical Practice
Gastroenterology, hereditary GI cancer syndromes

“I value the relationships I build with you and your family, as well as being a part of a multidisciplinary care team. I appreciate the unique experiences each patient brings to every clinical encounter.”

— Dr. Shen

How do you approach providing patient care?

I believe patient care should be based on academic rigor, transparency and collaboration. I value providing guideline-driven surveillance and treatment recommendations and using the best available data to inform clinical decision-making.

What drew you to your area of practice?

Cancer screening and surveillance are a foundational part of gastrointestinal physicians’ practice. In individuals with an elevated cancer risk due to either genetic mutations or family history, proper vigilance is even more important, often requiring close collaboration with primary care providers and other medical specialists. The cancer prevention field is also a fast-moving one, with much interest in developing more sensitive screening tests, better methods of prevention and even vaccines for cancer.

Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
