About

Dr. Rosa Nadal Rios is a board-certified medical oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch, specializing in genitourinary cancers. She aims to improve outcomes for urologic tumors through patient care, clinical trials and immunotherapy research.

Background

Dr. Nadal Rios is devoted to improving the treatment and survival of patients with genitourinary cancers. She cares for patients with bladder and kidney cancers and works to connect people with novel treatment options through clinical trials.

Her research focuses on developing new targeted therapies and immunotherapy based treatments for solid tumors. A central area of her work is bringing innovative engineered cancer cell therapies into clinical care. She developed the first clinical trial using engineered T cells that target human endogenous retrovirus E as a treatment approach for kidney cancer, reflecting her commitment to advancing immune based therapies for urologic malignancies.

As a native Spanish speaker, Dr. Nadal Rios values caring for patients who prefer to communicate in Spanish and actively advocates for their inclusion in clinical research. Across her clinical and research work, she aims to expand access to the latest therapies and improve outcomes for all patients with genitourinary cancers.

What do you want your patients to know about you?

I’m originally from Barcelona, Spain, but have happily made the United States home for a long time now.  After my fellowship at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, I conducted clinical trials at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, where I treated patients with some of the most advanced immunotherapies available today.  I bring this research experience – and a related conviction that better cancer treatments are possible – to my patients at Fred Hutch.

Have you or a loved one been affected by cancer?
How did that impact your outlook on cancer or your approach to care?

Since my father passed away from cancer when I was very young, I understand firsthand how difficult cancer can be for patients – and their families.  My own experience with cancer informs how I approach caring for patients and working with their families. I truly believe that the relationship between an oncologist and her patients is very personal as patients entrust oncologists with one of the greatest challenges of their lives. I continually strive to earn this trust by working hard to achieve the best possible outcomes for my patients.

By working with other bladder cancer specialists, I collaborate to develop the best treatment plan for each patient. I believe in a straightforward approach that empowers patients with the tools they need to make informed decisions about their care.

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
