Background

Dr. Kristine Karvonen is a physician scientist and pediatric hematologist and oncologist who studies social determinants of health (SDOH) and disparities in outcomes experienced by young individuals with cancer and blood disorders. Her research to date has includes structural, institutional, and individual level barriers to equitable outcomes such as structural racism, poverty, and limited health literacy. In addition to better understanding health disparities, Dr. Karvonen is building a research program focused on developing and implementing health equity interventions which target SDOH. Dr. Karvonen treats children and adolescents with cancer as well as those with sickle cell anemia at Seattle Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.
