About

Dr. Andrew Hsieh is a board-certified oncologist and scientist at Fred Hutch, specializing in genitourinary cancers. He treats patients while leading research to develop new targeted therapies that disrupt cancer cell growth.

Background

Dr. Hsieh focuses on delivering personalized care for people with genitourinary cancers including prostate and bladder cancer. He also leads a research lab that studies how cancer cells hijack the normal process cells use to make proteins. Every cell relies on tightly controlled “protein-making factories” to function properly, but cancer cells can alter this process to support rapid growth and spread. Dr. Hsieh’s research aims to understand these changes in detail and develop new drugs that can selectively target these cancer-specific mechanisms.

Through this work, his team aims to translate discoveries from the lab into treatments that improve outcomes and quality of life for patients.

Area of Clinical Practice
Genitourinary cancers

“As a physician-scientist, I get to experience the best of both worlds — walking with patients through their illness while also conducting research to find better ways to treat cancers.”

— Dr. Hsieh

Why did you become a physician-scientist?

Several years ago, before I even knew what kind of career I wanted, I volunteered at an infusion center. It was my first experience working with patients who have cancer, and it changed my life. I witnessed the best in people who were facing a tough situation; I was in awe of their resolve, and I knew then that I wanted to work in oncology. As a physician-scientist, I get to experience the best of both worlds — walking with patients through their illness while also conducting research to find better ways to treat cancers. I also get to engage with trainees who are wide-eyed about the science of oncology. Every day presents a new challenge, a new question to ask and new ways to solve problems.

What do you want patients to know about working with you?

A walk may begin with one step, but it requires thousands of steps to get where you’re going. What makes this work meaningful for me is the opportunity to accompany you as you go through the process of cancer diagnosis and treatment. I believe that your needs come first and that my role is to help you navigate the complex world of modern-day cancer medicine. I do this by first listening to your story — your concerns and your vision for your life — then using state-of-the-art therapies and informing you about innovative clinical trials that may be a good fit.

Research Interests

The goal of the Hsieh lab is to understand how deregulation of protein synthesis control determines the fate of epithelial cells in the multi-step process of tumor initiation and progression. Our long term goal is to merge our fundamental discoveries in translational control biology with the clinical needs of cancer patients.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Publications

Many of our Fred Hutch physicians and researchers conduct ongoing research to improve standards of patient care. Their work is evaluated by others in their field and selected for publication to the United States National Library of Medicine, the largest medical library in the world.
