About

Dr. Petros Grivas is a board-certified medical oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch and specializes in treating genitourinary cancers. He leads clinical trials and education efforts focused on advancing new treatments for bladder, prostate and related cancers.

Background

Dr. Grivas cares for patients with genitourinary cancers including bladder, prostate and testicular cancers. He focuses on providing evidence-based, personalized care for people with these diseases.

His research has helped lead to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of new drugs for bladder and urothelial cancer. He currently leads studies exploring checkpoint inhibitors, a type of immunotherapy drug that releases the brakes on a patient’s immune system and helps it mount a better response to cancer. Dr. Grivas also co-hosts an annual educational event focused on updates in bladder and urinary tract cancers for patients and their loved ones.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Grivas is the director of UW Medicine’s Genitourinary Cancers Program. In this role, he leads clinical trials, educates oncologists and trainees, and shares new research findings through lectures and publications. He is also the medical director of both Local/Regional Outreach and International Program at Fred Hutch.

Area of Clinical Practice
Genitourinary cancers

“At Fred Hutch, I belong to a family of innovative, patient-centered providers.”

— Dr. Grivas

What drew you to oncology?

Ever since I was young, I’ve wanted to help other people. I knew a family friend who was a physician, and he served as a great example of how I could channel this desire, combining knowledge and compassion so that I could be of service to a community. I chose to focus on genitourinary cancers because they’re a set of very common diseases affecting the urinary tract and male reproductive system, so I felt pursuing this specialty would allow me to make a difference in the lives of many. I see this area of oncology as an opportunity to bring together my interest in innovative research and patient care.

How do you like to work with patients?

I am dedicated to providing outstanding cancer care, which to me means taking a personalized approach with each patient and being efficient with time and resources. I hope to learn what brought you in and what your goals and expectations are — both for each visit and in the long term. While I bring a wealth of knowledge about genitourinary cancers and the latest research developments, I also believe that the little things, like a warm smile and a conversation held eye-to-eye, matter a great deal.
