About

Dr. Shannon Elizabeth Fogh  is a board-certified radiation oncologist and integrative medicine physician at Fred Hutch. Her research focuses on bridging the gap between radiation oncology and integrative medicine to improve outcomes and reduce treatment toxicity.

Background

As an integrative oncologist, Dr. Fogh helps patients both living with cancer and those who have completed cancer treatment. She has expertise within both integrative medicine and radiation oncology in treating patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors.

Dr. Fogh developed and led the first national cooperative group to study integrative interventions to prevent the treatment side effect of esophagitis. Her current research is focused on understanding the interplay of stress, hormones, cardiometabolic health and the microbiome on cancer outcomes and treatment-related symptoms such as fatigue and neurocognition (often referred to as “chemo brain”).

Dr. Fogh has authored more than 60 scientific publications and presented her research at more than 100 national and international conferences.

Area of Clinical Practice
Integrative oncology, primary and metastatic brain tumors

“I am passionate about working with patients to use integrative approaches that improve their quality of life and treatment outcomes.”

— Dr. Fogh

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

I want to have an open dialogue to make sure any integrative treatments patients are pursuing are safe and that patients feel supported. I aim to educate patients about approaches that we have good evidence-based knowledge about for both addressing symptoms and improving outcomes. I also want to help patients feel a sense of control in an otherwise chaotic time in their lives.

What brought you to integrative medicine and radiation oncology?

As a radiation oncologist, my interest in integrative medicine began when I realized the things patients asked me about most frequently were integrative approaches to complement their oncology treatment and improve their quality of life. My research has been dedicated to bridging gaps between radiation oncology and integrative and functional medicine.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians and researchers. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
