Dr. David Fredricks is a board-certified infectious diseases physician and researcher at Fred Hutch. He focuses on infections in cancer and blood and marrow transplant patients and research on human microbiomes.


Background

Dr. Fredricks cares for patients with infectious diseases, including those with cancer and people who have received blood and marrow transplants. His clinical interests include diagnosing and treating complex bacterial and fungal infections and using advanced molecular tools to identify infections and discover new pathogens.

In addition to patient care, Dr. Fredricks studies the human microbiome — the trillions of microorganisms that live in and on the body — to understand how changes in microbial communities affect health and disease. His work has examined microbes linked to bacterial vaginosis, a common condition associated with increased risks of pelvic inflammatory disease, HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. He also studies how microbial communities, particularly in the gut, influence outcomes for blood stem cell transplant recipients. Dr. Fredricks’ research has shown that changes in gut bacteria after antibiotic treatment may help predict the risk of graft-versus-host disease, a potentially life-threatening transplant complication.

Dr. Fredricks also leads the Microbiome Research Initiative at Fred Hutch, a collaborative effort that brings together experts from multiple disciplines to better understand how microbial communities affect human health and how this knowledge can improve patient care.
