About

Heather Caulfield is a board-certified physician assistant at Fred Hutch who cares for patients with breast cancer and breast conditions.

Area of Clinical Practice
Breast oncology

“I always want patients to feel like they have choices when it comes to their care and especially when making difficult decisions. It’s my job to give you all the necessary information so you can decide what best suits your situation.”

— Heather

How do you approach providing patient care? How have you been personally affected by cancer?

My approach to care first relies on building trust with patients. It’s critical to build trust so we can make sure we move through treatment highs and lows as a team.

During high school my dad was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. He underwent several surgeries and multiple hospital stays for aggressive chemotherapy and immunotherapy. He’s one of the strongest and most resilient people I know and is now healthy and back to baseline. I want to be part of the team motivating patients to stay hopeful and engaged in their care to help them achieve the best outcomes. I’ve seen firsthand that this is not only about the best medicine but the best people helping patients feel heard, involved and protected while encouraging them through difficult times.

What brought you to breast oncology?

Specializing in breast oncology allows me to fine tune my skills in supporting patients through some of the toughest moments they may experience. I am especially invested in making sure all people have a voice and feel heard throughout their care.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.

Your Care Team

At Fred Hutch, you receive care from a team of providers with extensive experience in your disease. Your team includes physicians, a patient care coordinator, a registered nurse, an advanced practice provider and others, based on your needs. You also have access to experts like registered dietitians, social workers, acupuncturists, psychiatrists and more who specialize in supporting people with cancer or blood disorders.

Insurance

Fred Hutch accepts most national private health insurance plans as well as Medicare. We also accept Medicaid for people from Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. We are working to ensure that everyone, no matter what their financial situation, has access to the care they need.
