About

Dr. Andrew Coveler is a medical oncologist and researcher specializing in pancreatic and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers at Fred Hutch. He leads clinical trials of immunotherapies and new treatments for GI cancers.

Background

Dr. Coveler‘s cares for patients with pancreatic cancer as well as cancers of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, anal canal and liver, including neuroendocrine tumors. As director of the Pancreatic Cancer Specialty Clinic, Dr. Coveler reviews nearly all medical records for patients coming to Fred Hutch with pancreatic cancer. In many cases, he and his colleagues begin evaluating a patient’s history before the first visit, helping ensure that the initial appointment is as useful and informative as possible.

Dr. Coveler is also actively involved in research aimed at improving outcomes for patients with GI cancers. As a member of the Fred Hutch Phase I Program, he collaborates with colleagues to bring new and novel therapies to patients through early-phase clinical trials. Much of his research focuses on immunotherapies and other emerging treatments, with the goal of advancing care options for people with pancreatic and other gastrointestinal cancers.

Area of Clinical Practice
Pancreatic cancer, gastrointestinal cancers

“I want your treatment to be integrated into your life, not to consume it.”

— Dr. Coveler

What’s your approach to working with patients?

My goal is to partner with you and your family so that you can take an active role in your care. I am an advocate for your choices so that you can confront the disease on your own terms. I strive to guide you through what’s unknown, sharing information about your disease, prognosis and treatment options. It is an honor to care for people with challenging diagnoses.

Why did you choose to join Fred Hutch?

I wanted to work at an institution that provides patient-centered care and plentiful opportunities for people to take part in clinical trials with new and novel treatments. Fred Hutch has been at the forefront of using the immune system to fight cancer. Though there has been limited success so far bringing immune-based therapies to GI cancers, I am hopeful it will happen. In addition, I enjoy working with the next generation of physicians, and I am able to do that by being a part of Fred Hutch and its partner organizations.
