About

Dr. Rahul Banerjee is a hematologist-oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch. He specializes in multiple myeloma and related blood cancers while leading research to improve patients’ experiences during treatment.

Background

Dr. Banerjee is dedicated to improving how patients live with multiple myeloma. While many people can now expect to live for several years with this disease, he recognizes that treatment side effects, weakened immunity and financial burdens can still significantly affect daily life — even when the cancer is in remission. Improving the patient’s experience throughout treatment is a central focus of his work.

He also treats patients with AL amyloidosis, a rarer but related condition that affects organs such as the kidneys and heart and is managed through close collaboration among cancer, kidney and heart specialists.

Dr. Banerjee’s research focuses on advanced immune-based treatments, including cellular immunotherapies such as CAR T-cell therapy, in which a patient’s own immune cells are modified to better recognize and attack cancer. He is a member of the International Myeloma Working Group and has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed publications, many of which focus on quality of life and supportive care for people undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma.

Area of Clinical Practice
Blood cancers

“My favorite memories with patients are, of course, the days when I get to tell them their cancer is in remission.”

— Dr. Banerjee

What motivates you about your work?

There's no scenario where hearing the word "cancer" isn't terrifying and all-consuming. My research at Fred Hutch focuses on strategies to lower side effects and increase patients’ time at home during treatment for myeloma.

How would you describe your approach to care?

"Precision oncology" based on the genetics of individual cancer cells is still a work in progress, but "precision health care delivery" isn't. For me, this means taking into account side effects, the impact of those side effects on quality of life (both for patients and their loved ones), financial and logistical considerations and many other things. My clinical care and research both focus on improving these parts of the patient experience.

Clinical Trials

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians.
