SEATTLE – July 22, 2025 – A Fred Hutch Cancer Center outpatient complex serving more than 60,000 adult patients per year will be renamed the Sloan Clinic in recognition of Stuart and Molly Sloan, who have increased their total giving to $100 million. The complex is located on the cancer center's South Lake Union campus.
The increase to $100 million builds upon the Sloans’ September 2022 transformational gift of $78 million, which is one of the largest gifts in the cancer center’s history and is a major step toward the Campaign for Fred Hutch $3 billion goal. The gift will remain focused on enabling Fred Hutch to expand the work and impact of the Sloan Precision Oncology Institute by making research discoveries that are successfully translated into new targeted therapies for patients.
“We are tremendously honored that Stuart and Molly Sloan are so inspired by our mission and our research and care that they want to give generously to Fred Hutch,” said Thomas J. Lynch Jr., MD, Fred Hutch president and director and holder of the Raisbeck Endowed Chair. “Not only have they been instrumental in helping us evolve our plans for expanding research on our South Lake Union campus, they also understand that our clinics were designed to provide more advanced treatments than most outpatient centers. Fred Hutch relies significantly on the generosity of donors, and renaming our two clinic buildings the Sloan Clinic is an important acknowledgement of the demonstrated commitment the Sloans have to advancing discoveries that can save lives.”
“I’ve often said that miracles come from labs, and my passion from the outset has been to advance the research that is helping cancer patients around the world,” said Stuart Sloan. “What I’ve also come to appreciate as more people in my life and across our community experience cancer is the critical role that high-quality care plays in partnership with research. It is truly an honor that these spaces of innovation and compassionate care will also bear our name.”
The Sloans have been closely aligned in the ongoing growth of Fred Hutch, supporting and endorsing a strategic opportunity announced in September 2024 for the cancer center to pivot from its original plan of constructing a new building to house the Stuart and Molly Sloan Precision Oncology Institute to acquiring existing space adjacent to its campus.
The opportunity included acquiring 1165 Eastlake Avenue East and entering into a joint venture partnership with Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc., in 1201 and 1208 Eastlake Avenue East. The strategic investment added more than 300,000 square feet of research, lab and adaptable space while saving more than $300 million in capital costs. Discussion about the expanded $100 million gift emerged following the acquisition announcement.
For more than a decade, Stuart and Molly Sloan have maintained a longstanding relationship with Fred Hutch. In 2013, Stuart Sloan served as the founding sponsor for Obliteride, the organization’s bike and 5k run/walk fundraising event, which he cycles in every year alongside thousands of other participants who share his passion for curing cancer faster.
