Fred Hutch’s all-female colorectal surgery team pioneers a multi-disciplinary approach: Drs. Mukta Krane, Sarah Atkinson and Joy Chen.
Sarah Atkinson, MD
Sarah Atkinson, MD, is a colorectal surgeon at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance specializing in colorectal surgery. Dr. Atkinson is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Washington Medicine. During her time at SCCA she has participated in numerous research projects and clinical trials and in 2020 was named to the Top Doctors list for Colon and Rectal Surgery by Seattle Met.
She received her B.S. in Neuroscience from Tulane University and her M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine. She completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Toronto.

Joy Chen, MD
Joy Chen, MD, is a colorectal surgeon at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance specializing in the surgical treatment of patients with colon, rectal and anal cancers. Dr. Chen is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine. In addition to providing care, Dr. Chen is interested in improving access to preventive colorectal cancer screenings and multi-disciplinary care in underserved communities. Her research has focused on the role academic institutions can play in supporting preventive health for colorectal cancers.
She obtained her B.S. and M.S. in Biological Sciences at Stanford University and received her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in general surgery at Stanford University and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Minnesota.

Mukta Krane, MD
Mukta Krane, MD, is a colorectal surgeon specializing in colon, rectal and anal cancers at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Her clinical expertise includes using minimally invasive surgical techniques. Her research interests focus on quality of life and functional outcomes after colorectal cancer treatment and disparities in healthcare delivery. During her time at SCCA she has written numerous publications and participated in several clinical trials and in 2020 was named to the Top Doctors list for Colon and Rectal Surgery by Seattle Met and Seattle Magazine.
In addition to caring for patients at SCCA, she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and serves as the Section Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at UW Medicine, SCCA’s alliance partner. Dr. Krane received her BA in Biology from The University of Pennsylvania and obtained her medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She completed her residency in general surgery at The University of Chicago Medicine and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at The Lahey Clinic.
