Dr. Laura Connelly-Smith specializes in blood stem cell transplantation and post-transplant complications. She studies how best to care for blood stem cell donors and manage the donation process. She also works to improve care for patients who experience graft-vs.-host disease after receiving a transplant of blood stem cells. GVHD is a common and potentially dangerous complication of transplant in which donor immune cells attack the patient’s healthy tissues. In particular, Dr. Connelly-Smith is studying a form of light therapy — extracorporeal photopheresis — for treating these patients.
