Efstathia (Effie) Andrikopoulou, MD, MBA, FACC, FASE, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington, explores why the future of healthcare AI depends not on better algorithms alone, but on building trustworthy, clinically integrated solutions that improve patient care.

Abstract:

Artificial intelligence is transforming healthcare, but model performance alone does not improve patient outcomes. As AI moves from research to clinical practice, the critical challenge becomes building solutions that clinicians trust, health systems can operationalize, and patients ultimately benefit from. Dr. Efstathia (Effie) Andrikopoulou will explore the gap between AI innovation and real-world adoption, highlighting why many promising technologies fail to achieve meaningful clinical impact despite strong technical performance.

Drawing on her experience as a cardiologist, imaging specialist, and clinical AI leader, she will discuss the essential elements of trustworthy AI: transparency, local validation, workflow integration, governance, continuous monitoring, and equity. Attendees will gain practical insights into how health systems can move beyond excitement about AI models and focus on responsible implementation strategies that improve care delivery while preserving clinician judgment and patient trust.

Efstathia (Effie) Andrikopoulou, MD, MBA, FACC, FASE is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington and a physician leader in clinical AI and cardiovascular innovation. As a practicing cardiologist, advanced cardiovascular imager, and cardio-oncologist, she brings a frontline perspective to the implementation of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Her work focuses on helping health systems and industry translate AI from promising algorithms into scalable, trustworthy clinical solutions that improve patient care. She serves in national leadership roles with the American College of Cardiology and the American Society of Echocardiography and is a frequent invited speaker on artificial intelligence, digital health, implementation science, and the future of healthcare.
