Expanding options for patients with rare cancers.
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is so rare that newly diagnosed patients are often the first case their oncologist has ever treated. With the support of a steadfast community, Dr. Paul Nghiem and his collaborators have built the world’s leading program dedicated to understanding and treating MCC, reshaping standards of care and transforming MCC patient prospects everywhere.
Why Fred Hutch?
When people say, “That can’t be done,” we say, “Watch us.”
Fred Hutch has worked on the front lines of science that transforms the world for 50 years. Our early work in bone marrow transplantation offered the first proof that the immune system could be harnessed to overcome cancer – a breakthrough that opened the door to cures once thought impossible.
Today, our researchers are tackling some of the toughest challenges in cancer and infectious diseases, from advancing immunotherapies to developing better ways to detect and prevent cancer. Every discovery is shaped by both science and compassion. And it’s our community — and their reasons to support our work— that continue to drive our progress.
Accountability & Impact
Fred Hutch is an independent, nonprofit organization that also serves as the cancer program for UW Medicine. Our relationship allows for enhanced care coordination between a top-ranked cancer center and a leading integrated health system and accelerates the latest scientific breakthroughs in cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
Fred Hutch is proud to raise funds that fuel the adult oncology program on behalf of both Fred Hutch and UW Medicine.
We're also proud to have a Gold Seal of Transparency on Candid (formerly GuideStar), a service that evaluates more than 2 million U.S. nonprofits. Our high standards for accountability and integrity extend to our research, patients, donors, and investors. Learn more about our accountability and impact.
Patient-centered: Fred Hutch scientists, clinicians and caregivers are driven by the urgency of patients who need effective, enduring cures. It’s the parent, the childhood friend, the coworker — those who have survived cancer and those who haven’t — who inspire us and drive us to find answers.
Relentless collaboration: On our campus and around the world. With patients, peers and partners in tech, life science and data science. To tailor personalized treatments for people diagnosed with cancer.
Unparalleled discovery: Across our divisions — from the basic tenets of life to breakthrough cancer treatments.
Focused on cures: Innovative research for five decades.
Advancing the standard of care: New strategies for prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship lead to better outcomes.
Built on a brother's love: When Dr. William Hutchinson lost his brother — baseball hero Fred Hutchinson — to cancer, he dreamed of a place where top scientists would work together to end cancer and other causes of human suffering. Fred Hutch is that place. Our work is guided by our values: collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect.
“We do not want future generations to experience the pain of losing a loved one or feel the uncertainty and fear of a cancer diagnosis. Giving generously to the Hutch gives us hope and promise."
— Fred Hutch supporters Luis and Colette Ulloa
“I want to support cancer research. I’m very passionate about finding a cure, and I think that there’s no better place to give the money to or volunteer time to than the Hutch.”
— Lindsey Pinckney, Fred Hutch supporter and leukemia survivor
“I volunteer at Fred Hutch to thank those who are making progress for our future and to prevent the loss of another loved one."
— Scott Bradford, 2019 Obliteride volunteer
We don’t know which discovery will yield the next cure — but we know we have to follow where the science leads us. Similarly, we don’t know which dollar will unlock the next breakthrough. With your commitment, we can fulfill our potential.”
— Thomas J. Lynch, Fred Hutch president and director and holder of the Raisbeck Endowed Chair

“My father was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma almost nine years ago. … He has now had clean MRIs for the past eight years. … I hope someday my father’s experience will be the rule, not the exception, for all cancer patients.”
