Medical Oncology

“Every time I care for a patient, I am also caring for their family.”

— Dr. Hsieh

What do you hope it’s like for a patient to work with you?

Patients with cancer, and their families, need a lot of attention and support. I cherish the memories of caring for patients, whatever their situation, and getting to know their families. It gives me a sense of achievement to develop this relationship while also sharing my knowledge.

I have retained many great friendships with patients, and we have met to catch up after their treatment was done.

What brought you to oncology?

I was originally fascinated by the pathophysiology of the gastric vascular system – the blood vessels that serve our digestive organs. It’s very complicated and quite interesting to me. When I was in training, I realized there was a lot to be done in the world of gastrointestinal oncology. We’ve had a lot of advances in cancer care, especially in immunotherapy, but these advances have been more focused in other areas, such as lung cancer. I saw there was a lot that could be done.

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
