About

Dr. Chen Zhang is a board-certified hematologist and researcher who cares for patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, hematologic malignancies and lymphomas at Fred Hutch.

Area of Clinical Practice
Hematologic malignancies, lymphomas, chronic lymphocytic leukemia

“My commitment is to use my full knowledge and experience, and the very best evidence we have, to guide your care. If a question ever arises where I need another expert's insight, I won't hesitate to seek it — your well-being is the highest priority.”

— Dr. Zhang

What drew you to your area of practice?

I decided to specialize in lymphoma because it represents a uniquely challenging and rewarding area of oncology. Lymphoma is not a single disease but a complex spectrum of subtypes, each with its own biology and behavior. It requires a nuanced and personalized approach to treatment. I appreciate the intellectual challenge of navigating this complexity and tailoring strategies for each patient. The field is also at the forefront of modern cancer care, demanding a truly multidisciplinary approach that integrates radiation oncology, immunotherapy and novel cellular therapies like CAR-T. This collaborative environment is where I thrive; working alongside dedicated teams from various specialties allows us to provide truly comprehensive care.

It is the combination of tackling complex disease biology, using innovative treatments and the profound privilege of building long-term relationships with patients that makes this focus so meaningful to me.

How do you approach providing patient care?

Treating the lymphoma itself with the most advanced, evidence-based care is our foundation — that’s a given. My focus doesn’t stop there. I’m just as committed to protecting your quality of life, helping you manage any symptoms or side effects and supporting you emotionally throughout the process. Think of me as your guide and partner. My job is to listen, to understand what matters most to you — your goals, your values and how you want to live your life — and then tailor every decision to fit that picture. Your care plan should be as unique as you are. I approach every decision with you the way I would for my own family: with honesty, compassion and a deep respect for your values and goals.

We make promising new treatments available to you through studies called clinical trials led by Fred Hutch physicians. Many of these trials at Fred Hutch have led to FDA-approved treatments and have improved standards of care globally. Together, you and your physician can decide if a study is right for you.
