Dr. Jamie S.K. Takayesu is a radiation oncologist and researcher at Fred Hutch who treats people with cancer while studying survivorship and functional recovery after radiation therapy.

Background

Dr. Takayesu provides radiation therapy with a strong emphasis on empathetic, patient centered care for people with gastrointestinal cancer and genitourinary cancer. She is motivated by helping people through a life changing cancer diagnosis and values providing treatments that can both cure cancer and improve quality of life.

Her research focuses on cancer survivorship and on how radiation techniques and supportive services can be improved to help patients function better after treatment, especially for patients with gastrointestinal and prostate cancers. This includes studying ways to reduce long-term side effects and support recovery, particularly for people treated with radiation. Her work aims to connect thoughtful clinical care with research that improves life after cancer treatment.

How have you been personally impacted by cancer?

My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and the sheer number of decisions that had to be made during an already stressful time was paralyzing. This experience was formative for my career. 

My duty is to provide you with a compassionate explanation of where your diagnosis stands now and a thorough understanding of what lies ahead. Shared decision-making does not mean that I will give you half-baked views on treatment options and leave you to make one of the most important decisions of your life. It means I will take the time to learn about you and your values to make sure we develop the best care plan for you. 

Do you have a story about a patient you’d like to share?

A patient was having difficulty communicating with the physicians and staff on his care team in the hospital. While we were discussing his prognosis and treatment plan, he suddenly opened up to me about his love for his niece, sharing pictures of a rocking chair he made for her. He was eager to get out of the hospital to spend time with her, so we worked together on specific steps to get him home safely as soon as possible. I always feel that it is such a privilege when patients not only allow me to provide medical care, but also allow me a glimpse into their lives and hearts.
