Dr. Mike Owens is a gastroenterologist and researcher at Fred Hutch who cares for patients with gastrointestinal cancers and researches these diseases.

Background

Dr. Owens has clinical expertise in interventional endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and radiofrequency/cryoablation in addition to gastrointestinal cancers.

His current research projects include using echo-endoscopy for pancreatic cancer early detection and applying radioligand therapy that targets fibroblast activation protein for pancreatic cancer. Dr. Owens aligns procedural care with research requiring tissue acquisition, ablation, resection or injection relating to gastrointestinal cancers and pre-cancerous conditions. Device development is a common component of some of his research.

What do you want patients to know about you?

I realize there are a lot of system stressors on all sides of health care and as a result see myself as a partner with patients to deal with any frustrations. In our modern era, this can also mean a quick review of information a patient brings to our meetings from the internet or AI so we can determine and understand the importance and accuracy. The doctor-patient relationship is still an important one.

What brought you to oncology?

The combination of my interests, learned skills in interventional endoscopy and mentorship built a strong desire to dedicate my career to improving the care of patients with cancer.
